I’ll do it tomorrow? How many times have you said that in your head? You know what that’s called, it’s procrastination! Realize it, recognize it and nip it in the bud. The shadow of procrastination and laziness is always lurking so it’s important to work to overcome this habit.

Laziness creates a snowball effect of procrastination because everything that should have been done is being pushed back. Procrastination creates undo stress which in turn, creates negative emotions like:

  • Anxiety

  • Fear

  • Anger

  • Regret

All this could be prevented if you just make the necessary changes to work towards eliminating that habit. It’s not easy to break tradition and stop doing what you’ve done for so long. It will take determination and will power to create a new, more productive habit for yourself.

1. Not a Minute to Lose. From personal experience, the number one way I stop myself from procrastinating is to get up and get started on what I need to do right away. I’ve been known to spend a little too much time scrolling aimlessly through my phone, watching YT videos, looking at Instagram etc. Putting off what I needed to get done because of sheer laziness. The moment I started getting up and getting started, I was able to get more done and push less into the next days list of things to do.

2. Sonnets not Novels. Discard the lengthy TO-DO List. It’s daunting to look at a mile long list of things that need to be done. It kind of makes you want to jump back in bed and pull the covers over your head.  Once you factor in the time it may take to tackle these tasks, you would probably never get them all done anyway. A better approach would be to create a list of 5-8 achievable tasks and put the most tedious at the top. I find it better to get the difficult things done first, the less mind numbing tasks next, then sprinkle the things you can set and forget in between.

For example, on my list of things to do today is:

  • outline & create this blog post

  • Pick stock images for this blog post

  • Meal plan for the week

  • Make grocery list

  • Grocery shop/order online

  • Do laundry

The blog work is the most tedious so that it at the top of my list for the day. My meal planning and grocery listing doesn’t require as much brain power so it comes after and I sprinkle rotating clothes from the washer to the dryer in between these things throughout the day.

3. Stick to the Script. Don’t waste time putting thought into a list that you’re not going to follow. Stick to your script and follow the plan. It’s understandable that sometimes unforeseen circumstances arise but, for all intents and purposes try to stick to the plan you’ve laid out for yourself.

4. Eliminate Distractions. It’s awfully hard to concentrate on what you need to do when your phone’s going off or your hopping from browser window to browser window every time a new thought crosses you mind. It is however ok, to have a place to jot down things that come to mind so you won’t forget. Write it down and put it aside to address later. I have an easy to use brain dump organizer template to help with this.

5. Breaks in Between. It’s important to give yourself small breaks between tasks just to relax and do a little mental preparation before moving onto the next item on your list of things to do. Small break does not mean an hour…. 10-15 minutes are more ideal. That gives you time to have a snack or even put that next load of laundry in the wash.

There’s no concrete solution to completely eliminate  procrastination. We all “just don’t feel like it” sometimes. We can however, work toward making an effort to get ‘er done even if we “just don’t feel like it”. For most times that I’ve been lazy and not done what I was supposed to do, I’ve regretted the decision but in turn, have always genuinely felt better upon completion of the things that I did not procrastinate to do.

  1. WEEKLY PLANNING/GOAL SETTING

I’ve created a weekly planner for myself to stay organized with this week to week. I like using this single page document in lieu of my big planner from week to week just for ease and simplicity. I can also put week specific details for that week on the page that I may not want to “clutter” my planner with. Once I’m done with it I can toss it or keep in to refer back to. I’ve found it to be quite useful so I definitely wanted to share with you guys.

2. TIME BLOCKING

I cannot stress how this has helped me stay organized and complete the tasks I want to complete without getting distracted. In essence, time blocking is just scheduling your to-do list against your calendar.

The most important and helpful components of time blocking are:

  • Set amount of time to complete a task

  • Work on ONLY one task for that block of time

What does and doesn’t get blocked and how far in advance to plan blocked tasks can all be modified to fit your life and schedule. The important thing is, this is a great system to use for organizing your to-do list.

3. ROUTINES

Once you’ve gotten your tasks blocked of into specific times for tackling, you have to decide in what order you will complete said tasks. What steps will you follow to get this done? Here is where your routine comes in. Your routine is a group of specific steps you follow daily, weekly or monthly to complete certain tasks. Decide what would be the most logical way for you to go about completing the goals you’ve set for each block of time and work your steps from there.

How to Boost Productivity & Crush Your To-Do List

Drowning in your to-do list?

We’ve all been there at one time or another. Life can get hectic with work, family, trying to maintain your home and sanity. You can drastically improve your productivity by setting up the framework for success. Once you’ve tasted the sweet victory of slaying your to-do list, you’ll never look back.

Here’s how to do it.

PICK YOUR BEST TIME OF DAY. This is probably the most important tip of all. When we’re not motivated, the likelihood of us getting anything productive done is slim to none.

  • Are you a morning person?

  • Are you a night person?

This is time of day when you do your best thinking and your best doing. It’s when you’re most motivated to tackle any tasks. For me, it’s morning. I am absolutely an early bird. I’m up conquering the world while my family is sleeping.  Just this morning I woke up cooked breakfast, washed a load of clothes and prepped food for a cookout we’ll be having later this evening. All before I left for work at 7am.

DITCH THE NOTIFICATIONS & CLOSE WINDOWS. It’s awfully hard to concentrate on what you need to do when your phone’s going off and your hopping from browser window to browser window every time a new thought crosses you mind that you just have research right away.

BRAIN DUMP. Grab a pen and paper. I’ve provided a FREE, easy to use organizer here for you. A brain dump is literally getting all of your thoughts and to-do’s out of your brain and onto paper. It’s a disorganized list of all of the thoughts racing around your head. Those many thoughts that come to mind which keep multiple browser windows open….. yes those, they should be jotted down.

TASK BATCHING. This is how you take control of the tasks you want to tackle in a day. Batching is the action of doing a “batch” of similar tasks in one block of time. Take the “to-dos” from your brain dump and organize them into a prioritized list. It is best to do this when you are free from distractions which is why it is very important to first pick you best time of day and turn off distractions.  Here are some activities that are best done when batched:

  • Emails

  • Laundry

  • Chores

  • Cooking

  • Planning

  • Blogging

EXECUTION. You’ve laid your framework for success so you must have discipline to stick to the plan. It’s not going to work if you don’t stick to it. This is the hard part but, definitely the most rewarding. When your time’s up, stop and reward yourself for a job well done. These small victories lead to big wins and that’s definitely worth celebrating.

5 Proven Secrets for a Balanced Mom Life

Is your tank running on E?

News flash ladies (and gents if you’re reading), balance does not mean balancing “doing it all”. No one can do it all without eventually suffering burnout which could be what someone reading this is feeling right now. Having a balanced life means making time for the things you HAVE TO do as well as the things you LIKE TO do. With kids this can seem impossible but, with a little bit of groundwork, moms can get it done.

1.      PRIORITIZE & PLAN

standards of success balance your life, family and goals busy moms productivity organization hacks

If you don’t plan your activities and prioritize your to-do list you’ll surely forget when something has to be done and be pulled in every direction trying to complete you tasks.

·        lay everything out on the table

·        make a list

·        sort your list

·        create a plan of action for your list

standards of success balance your life, family and goals busy moms productivity organization hacks

Get your planner or digital calendar, get some paper or a notebook, a pen and get to work. Lay everything out on the table that you need to do. If it’s a paper that needs to be completed and returned to the kids’ school, an email you need to follow up on, anything that requires your attention in the next 7 days should be laid out and ready to be dealt with. Make a list of the various tasks you must complete and places you need to be. After school activities, appointments, projects etc.. Put your list in order of priority. What must you do now and what can you do later. Create a plan of tackling this list. Are there steps you must do prior to completing certain tasks? Be sure to write that down as well. All there’s left to do now is take the list to the planner and fill it in.

2. TRY TO BE ORGANIZED

standards of success balance your life, family and goals busy moms productivity organization hacks

For some of us staying organized can be difficult. but, with practice it can be done. One of the things I pride myself on being able to do is having a place for certain things and putting things back in their place when I am done with it. Let me tell you something else, it annoys me to no end when someone uses something of mine and doesn’t put it back where they got it from. Grrrr. I digress, use a planner or digital calendar to put your to do list on. You can color code and put a decorative flair to it…. ya know, to distract yourself from all the crap you gotta do.

3. DELEGATE When POSSIBLE

I know this may be difficult for some of us moms to do since we like to “do it all”. It is vital to our sanity that we accept help from others whenever possible.

Why should we delegate?

standards of success balance your life, family and goals busy moms productivity organization hacks
  • Allow yourself to “fail”. Many times moms think if they aren’t able to do every little thing that they THINK are “mom duties” that its somehow equates to failure. I’m here to tell you, “mom duties” can easily be turned into “dad duties” and “big brother/big sister duties”. Everyone can help with the duties that make the family thrive together and when a family works together, no one “fails”.

  • Practice makes perfect. It’s never to early to teach your children life skills they will someday need. The only way they will become proficient is be allowed the opportunity to practice.

  • You don’t know what you’re doing. Sometimes it maybe necessary to hire a professional to complete certain tasks because we just don’t know what we’re doing. You just might end up costing yourself more time and money when you try to be Jack (or Jill) of all trades.

4. get a routine

When you know what needs to be done and you put a system in place to get it done, life just runs smoothly. Routines help us feel more in control of things in our lives. Routines help us better manage time so we can make time for other things we need to do or other things we like to do. Even when things go awry if you’ve got a routine in place of how you’ll get things done, it will be easier to reign it all in and get back on track.

5. take some me time.

This could very easily be the most important thing you can do to bring some balance to your life. When mama is a wreck, the family is a wreck. You’ve got to take some time for yourself. Do something you like to do. Do something that relaxes you. Schedule some time to just center yourself and relax your mind. Quiet time. I love quiet time.
